"Crossing the Valley: Die Metamorhose des Zerfalls" (the metamorphosis of decay) is one of the best artist-scientist collaborations of all time. Working day and night with a fabulous team, including the scientist Florian Schneider, Joachim Jacob built a fabulous lab in which to study decomposition (order going to chaos, symbolized by an "s"). The team separated logs into three categories of decay. In addition to using the logs to build free-standing walls with views onto the forest, they created an s-shaped river of logs that flows from least to most decayed. Spectators are invited to observe decay in motion, as dead wood gives way to fertile soil.
